Oxer started making wines in DO Bizkaiko Txakolina in 1999. Marko is the name of Oxer´s family house and it became his father´s nickname. It was his father who planted the vines, hence the name Marko for the Txakoli wines. This is a serious style of dry Txakoli (indigenous yeast, no fining nor filtration, partly use of oak), not the simple slightly fizzy version. Vineyards are worked organically and biodynamic practices are being used as well. Also is Oxer one of the few producers in the region making a late harvest Txakoli, a rare speciality.
In 2009 Oxer moved to northern La Rioja for he had always wanted to make wine there. He fell in love with the place and decided to stay after his first wine Nocturna (from bought-in grapes, which he no longer makes) turned out to be a success.
He then started to buy plots of (century!) old vines of which he started to make single varietal and single vineyard wines. Iraun is the one white wine (Viura). Artillero is 100% Tempranillo (Rioja Alavesa), Suzzane 100% Garnacha (Rioja Alta) and Kalamity is a blend of the best selection of grapes and vineyards in both Rioja Alta and Alavesa. Also here the vineyards are worked organically and biodynamic viticulture was introduced recently. And also here, indigenous yeasts are used. For fermentation and ageing different kind of vessels are used: concrete egg, foudre (Stockinger), amphorae, French oak barrels.
Oxer works with great attention to detail. Not only in vineyard and winery, but also when it comes to the labels. All inspired by musicians, artists, poets etcetera.
