Bodegas & Winemakers we work with                                                  The Wines

Luberri (D.O.C. Rioja) Since the eighteenth century, many of the inhabitants in this region have been true pioneers, who have put their faith in the potential of the native red variety called Tempranillo. Luberri is a family winery founded in 1991 and located in the Rioja Alavesa, who have used their 52 hectares of vineyards to follow a simillar historical path and plant Tempranillo & Viura. Florentino Monje used to be the primary winemaker at the famous Rioja bodega called Artadi, and the experience, as vinegrower and winemaker, is reflected year after year in the ratings given to each of their wines. This is achieved by the process of picking the best grapes from old vines and aging in crianza using French oak. This knowledge has allowed Florentino to make & develop high-end wines but without the exorbitant prices. Amen to that.

Bodegas San Román (D.O. Toro) Founded in 1997 by former Vega Sicilia winemaker Mariano Garcia Fernandez, this bodega is owned & run by Mariano and his 2 son’s, Eduardo and Alberto, who own 60 hectares of vineyards in D.O. Toro, planted mostly with Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) and Garnacha. Because of the terroir being characterised by extreme continental climate of minimum rainfall, abundant hours of sunshine, and strong temperature contrasts between night & day, the resulting wines often shown great structure, intensity & concentration of fruit. Mostly planted in clay soil, and with an average age of 35 years, San Román wines are often deep & mineral, well-structured, and have defined flavours of black fruit - but they are finely balanced by clean crisp acidity and refined tannins. All aging in crianza is done in French and American oak.

Joaquin Rebolledo (D.O. Valdedorras) 30 years ago the Rebolledo Family pioneered the recovery of the Godello grape. Driven by Joaquin Rebolledo, the winery now focuses on two varietals, Godello & Mencia, with both these wines extremely well received, & winning numerous awards over different vintages. In 1993 their Godello was the first Galician wine to win the Golden Tendril, sparking a dramatic increase in winemakers moving into Valdeorras. In 2008 the Tinto Barrica Mencia was awarded best red from of Galicia, setting the standard for Mencia reds that are now coming out of the north west of Spain. And most recently, Joaquin's joven Mencia was voted Spain's best young wine for 2013.

The Dominio de Tares Estate (D.O. Bierzo) is located in the High Bierzo, and has become a reference winery for wine producers, not only for the quality of the wines, but for the actual concept they have developed using Mencia. Founded by a group of young visionaries at the start of 2000. They recognized the potential of the indigenous Mencía grape that flourishes in this region. The vineyards are worked by hand, and yields are kept low to optimize the quality of the vines that age between 40 & 100 years, and also optimize the quality of the wines.

Casa Castillo (D.O. Jumilla) has been producing wine since 1874, when in 1941 it was then acquired by the Roch family. Julia Roch and her grandson, José Maria Vicente, have been recovering the artisanal origins of this estate, and have been making significant strides in the integrity and quality of winemaking ever since. The high plateau of Jumilla is where the family concentrates their efforts, and believes that Monastrell, Syrah, & Garnacha are the varietals that provide the best wines. Low production & high concentration of their vineyards because of the terroir & mild climatic Mediterranian conditions, help insure there is a consistent richness in their wines, and a robust structure that is well seduced by aging in Barrels that are 100% French Oak. All Casa Castillo wines have rated highly amongst their peers.

Bodega Rejadorada (D.O. Toro) is one of the top 5 wineries in D.O. Toro, producing high quality premium wines with national and international recognition. Since their first harvest in 1999, & growing only tempranillo, Bodega Rejadorada has released 5 wines from 5 different areas, & using 5 different aging techniques. Whilst the harsh continental climate, the sandstone, clay and limestone soil offer the vines along the River Duero the ideal conditions for the production of high quality wines. Bodegas Rejadoada have set themselves a very high standard, and an objective to produce limited, exclusive, & high quality red wines that adheres to and respects the region’s characteristics and personality

Gargalo (D.O. Monterrei) Roberto Verino, one of Spain's most influential fashion designers, inaugurated his winery, Gargalo, in 1998 where they have been making extraordinary wines since then. Terra do Gargalo whites are made with Godello, Treixadura, & Albariño varieties. Whilst Mencia, Tempranillo,  and Bastardo varieties are used for reds under the Terra do Gargalo label. The winery is located in the Tamega River basin, a tributary of the Duero, whilst the vines are located in the Monterrei Valley, on clay and slate soil, and all grapes are hand-harvested and manually selected at the winery. The winery produces high-quality wines that reflect the nature of the soils and the surrounding environment.

Dominio Dostares (D.O. Castillo-Leon)  is, in short, the bodegas commitment towards the variety 'Prieto Picudo'.

In the heart of Leon, the first steps in the creation of the new winery was the identification and acquisition of old vines of this noble variety. The vineyard now has vines that average between 80-110 years. The Prieto grape is a true reflection of 'savoir-faire' inherited

from the parent winery, Dominio de Tares, which is widely recognized in and outside Spain through its commitment to quality.

This peculiar variety gives rise to great wines, high expression, and a rich fruit load.

Bodegas Hermanos del Villar (D.O. Rueda) has 150 hectares of vineyards divided between the municipalities of Rueda, La Seca and Alaejos. The aim of the winery has always been pursuing the ideal location of their vineyards to maximize grape quality. This family owned cellar, now directed by the young Pablo del Villar Igea since 1995, and with only 200 barrels, prefers to focus on growing Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, which are the basis varietal white wines within the D.O of Rueda. The resulting wines are real standouts amongst the white wines of northern Spain. And because of this, both wines have won numerous awards, and often rate highly within the wine community. Better still, both wines are value for money.

Valdavia (D.O. Ribeiro) is a small family–run vineyard located in Cuñas, in the heart of the river Avia, home of the best Ribeiro. The history of the winery and vineyard is closely linked to the Monastery of San Clodio, that controlled it since its origins, more than 800 years ago. The winery occupies over 2 hectares of vineyards that surround the ancient cellar, restored respecting the original architectural materials and elements. Its wines, with limited biodynamic production, are prepared with grapes from its vineyards, which grants them personality, authenticity and exclusivity.

Pena das Donas (D.O. Ribeira Sacra) was established in 2005 by two partners, both in love with wine tradition in the area, who share a vision of innovations both in viticulture and winemaking, bringing a new personality to the wines of Adega Pena das Donas. Jesús Vázquez Rodríguez & Antonio Lombardía Crespo have worked as wine consultants for many wineries in the area before starting their own. All the vineyards are located in the slopes of Sil riverside, planted in very dramatic terraces.

Santa Marta Bodegas (D.O. Valdeorras). Located in Galicia, at an altitude of 600 metres in a climate with cold winters and warm summers, the vineyard of Santa Marta forms part of an integrated production plan where respect for the plant and its fruit is the basis for the preparation of good wines. Santa Marta is a family winery that produces, manufactures and bottles its own wines since 1998 combining the oldest tradition with present day innovation.

Lagar de Besada (D.O. Rias Baixas) their beginings in 1988, the philosophy of this family winery has been to optimize the

potential grape-terroir in order to obtain high quality wines. The whole family controls each detail from the vineyard until the

bottling process in order to guarantee the product and the quality. This winery is particularly known for their careful selection of

the grapes. Here they introduce a “young Albariño” amazing for all its senses, and controlled by Maria Sineiro, the oenologist that

is responsible for their outstanding white wines.

Adegas Ladairo (D.O. Monterrei) In the early's 1980s, José Luis Vaz, owner and founder of this small winery, inherited from his parents a property located in the valley of Ladairo, which forms part the winery's name: Adegas Ladairo. Thanks to his effort and vision,

he has turned it into a plantation of vineyards that today occupies 20 hectares, where he has been able to reflect his own exceptional personality of the wine-making. Jose Luis cares for every detail, using both modern techniques & artisanal methods that are oriented towards the best soils of this appellation. It was predictable that the Godello white varietal would take center stage. This native grape

in combination with the microclimate, the soils and, in this case, the wood, reaches an extraordinary result.

Valdemonjas (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is a family business located in an emblematic area of Ribera, the "Golden Mile"

sharing the natural neighborhood with one of Spain's most famous bodegas Vega Sicilia. One of the contributors of Valdemonjas is

the well known Italian enologist Luca D'Attoma, who has had two 100 point wines,(Suvereto/Toscana- 1997 and 2004 Le Macchiole Messorio -Bolgheri/Toscana). His winemaking always focuses on the pursuit of excellence that can only be achievable with

exceptional grapes, a privileged terroir, passion and care. The result is limited production wines, and with its exclusivity and

uniqueness this bodega knows how to please anyone who craves something different and unique.

De Bardos (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is a selection of the very best vineyards from Ribera del Duero’s most emblematic

regions. Ars Romantica is 100% ‘Tinta del país’ (Tempranillo), and the painstaking vinification process aims to bring out the individual characteristics of the regions chosen for the project. Ars Romántica is a signature wine that exhibits a modern, smooth & powerful personality, created from carefully selected grapes.

Alto Sotillo (D.O. Ribera del Duero) Founded by the Calvo family, bodegas "Alto Sotillo" lies in Sotillo de la Ribera (next Burgos) in the DO range Ribera del Duero. The winery is built into the mountain, and the vineyards cover 20 hectares that are spread across many different parcels in the communes of Sotillo de la Ribera and Gumiel de Mercado. Originally started by their grandfather to sell the grapes to other wineries, brothers Miguel & Carlos Calvo turned to making their own wines in 2002, focusing on Tempranillo and using barrels made with American oak.

CA N'ESTRUC (D.O. Catalunya) The farm has been rooted in the world of wine since 1548, which is situated on the slopes of the mountain of Montserrat, near Barcelona 165 meters above sea-level. Francisco Martí Badia cultivates this 21 ha property with different varieties that are indigenous to the region. Francisco remembers working the vineyards of Ca n’Estruc as a child, riding his donkey through the fields with his grandfather. Today Francisco nurtures those same vines, many of them 80 years old in the shadow of Montserrat. This is sacred land to Francisco, where he produces some of the best Xarel-lo grapes in Spain, leading to wines that show unusual depth and complexity.

Proyecto Garnachas  (D.O. Calatayud & D.O.C Priorat) This collection is the result of a very personal project that initiated with the search for vineyards in different areas of Spain that best reflected the essence of this variety. The result is a collection of monovarietal wines from very old vineyards that capture the concept of Terroir to perfection, as each wine expresses all the nuances and singularities typical of its area. All these wines are made in areas near Valle del Ebro, where Garnacha originated, and it offers the optimum conditions required for this variety due to both the climate and the nature of its soils.

Matsu (D.O. Toro) is more than a winery or a wine; it is a modern project of sustainable viticulture that brings forth an exclusive collection of high expression wines. All of its wines are natural, in so far as its vineyards are cultivated in a form that is completely ecological, avoiding any use of chemical or synthetic herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Matsu represents the essence of a natural wine, and is represented with generations of grape growers that are seen on the labels of this Spanish winery.

Winery Arts (Ribera Del Queiles) The Designation of Origin Ribera del Queiles covers Navarra and Aragon and is one of the best and most original winemaking areas in Spain. Its old vineyards, which produce a very low yield, are located on the slopes by the river Queiles, which descends down 2,300 meters from the Moncayo to Ribera del Ebro. The area’s Mediterranean character is present in these strong-bodied wines with a greedy touch, while the Atlantic influence generated by the Moncayo -a natural barrier for Northwest winds- contributes freshness and a degree of acidity on the back end. Winery Arts presents a collection of special & exclusive wines that have been inspired by the number 9, considered by several cultures as a supreme present, and we believe these wines fall into category of supreme & unique wines.

ADEGAS VALTEA (D.O. Rias Baixas) is one of the six Galician Wineries certificated by the Galician Government with the Quality Certificate “Galicia Calidade”, this award is given only the best Galician products. Founded in 1997 by the current owners, Lázaro Moreno and winemaker Carla González, the bodega has 13ha of vineyards, whilst Finca Garabato is a single vineyard wine. Carla's great work was recently rewarded, with their young Albariño winning 2nd prize in the Galician wine awards in 2013, whilst their Finca Garabato often rates very highly, and is a favourite for many.

Bodegas Edra (D.O. Aragón) was started in 1999 by the Ascaso-Sarasa family in Northern Spain. Led by Alejandro and guided by of Antonio Palacios Garcia, Edra prefers to focus on varietals that are more common in France than Spain (Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah) and because of this we have chosen a white wine that is also more synonymous with those north of the border; Viognier. The calcareous soils that are deep and full of clay provide excellent drainage, and because of this along with the winemaker’s skill, the vine-to-wine is often remarkable , and they happily sit on the wine lists of most Michelin starred restaurants throughout Spain.

Almaroja ( D.O. Arribes del Duero) A combination of a relatively new appellation and new grape variety, but this lusciously aromatic red from Arribes a relatively new DO on the Spanish side of the border with Portugal, depends largely on the fragrant Juan Garcia varietal. It is also made, by a young Englishwoman, Charlotte Allen. And basically upstream of Portugal's Douro Valley. Average vine age on her 14 hectares slope is 75 years, The various varieties are all mixed up in the vineyard so that is what is known as a field blend of about 70% Juan Garcia, characteristic of the far west of Spain, with much of the rest a mixture Rufete, Bruñal, Tempranillo and Tinta Madrid, which are picked first as they are early ripeners. The remaining varieties – the exotic-sounding Bastardillo Chico, Bastardillo, Serrano, Tinta Jeromo, Gajo Arroba and Verdejo Colorado.

Pedro Balda (D.O.C. Rioja) A young winemaker that has been lauded around the globe for his winemaking skills and his obession with natural wines. Pedro’s philosophy is his greatest asset when it comes to wine making… "Recovery, presentation and characterization of minority grape varieties in Rioja".

Palacio del Camino Real (D.O.C. Rioja) is a return to the essence of Rioja wines from the early 20th century. This collection of wines originates from the highest and coldest areas of the Designation of Origin, where the Garnacha variety produces its best results. This is why some vineyards have resisted being pulled up in the past, especially those located in the valleys of Alto Najerilla and Cárdenas, a rediscovered area of Rioja. This area has a long winegrowing tradition of small plots of old vineyards and has many wineries, where young wines were made, that follow traditional methods. The climate change and the current cycle of high temperatures have made this area one of the best in the Rioja Designation of Origin, as it is in these conditions that the grapes reach their optimum maturation point.

El Garnacho Viejo de la Familia Acha (D.O.C. Rioja) This is the result of a very personal project by Raul Acha & of monovarietal wines from very old vineyards that capture the concept of ‘Terroir’ to perfection, as each wine expresses all the nuances & singularities typical of its winemaking area. The fruit is from the Acha Family’s best centenary vines located in Cardenas, which is Raul Acha’s hometown & and where he learned the Rioja wine tradition and the expertise of his ancestors. The family members themselves, who have also destemmed them grape by grape, pressed them in the tradional way and personally monitored them in each of the stages, have harvested the grapes with special care. All of this makes it a very special collection. A very limited production of bottles conceived to be enjoyed in special moments.

Pago del Vicario (V.T. La Mancha) Founded in 2000 by brothers Antonio and Ignacio Fernández Barco , whose family business rooted in the Castilian Mancha viticulture. This single estate winery is located approximately 600 m in altitude, with about 130 hectares distributed into small parcels to facilitate individualized care and treating the varietals according to their characteristics. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot for reds, and Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for whites. For a young winery they are doing remarkable things. Only recently a number of their wines came out with top honours in the best of catergoies at the Spanish Association of Wine Writers and Specialized Media (AEPEV) in Spanish wine, whilst their other wines rated in the top three. It's a privilege for us to have this bodega under the Barrica Wines umbrella

Cote de Gomariz (D.O. Ribeiro) Located in the Ribeiro region in Galicia, Coto de Gomariz is made up of several vineyards covering

a total of about fifty acres in the districts of Gomariz, Vieite, Esposende and Beade. In 1979 the Figueiral estate was recovered and became the first of the properties to be included in the Coto de Gomariz vineyard terrain. This marked the first step towards restoration of the native

Ribeiro varieties, including the white Albarino, Treixadura, Loureira and Godello varieties, as well as the red Sousón, Ferrol, Mencía, Brancellao and Caiño Longo.

Lagar de Costa (D.O. Rias Baixas)  Lagar de Costa is a three generation family winery, commited to the care of the Albariño vine.

With 90% of the grapes coming from the Estate's vineyards, and some vines over 50 years old. The vines grow near the coast, at an altitude of only 0-30 m above sea-level, where all grapes are selected by hand. The soil is composed of sandy loam, and therefore absorbs and drains water easily.  Their final aim is always to obtain a wine that expresses its unique characteristics, and captures the essence of the unique maritime influence.

Vinyes del Terrer (D.O. Tarragona) The Morell family vineyard estate is comprised of nine parcels totalling seventeen acres in the outskirts of Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast. We should never underestimate the importance of the sea, especially when it comes to its influence on the vineyards, and as such, the sea helps to secure high quality grapes. The vineyard is nearly at sea level and is only 2 km from the sea. This moderating maritime influence, warm and sunny but not hot climate, cool breezes and unique fossilized red limestone soils give the wines a real sense of elegance and freshness. Everything in the bodega, lead by winemaker Eduard Morell, is done gently and slowly in order to preserve the fruit character

Jose Pariente (D.O. Rueda) In the 1960s, José Pariente began producing artisanal white wines from a raw material of exceptional quality: Verdejo grapes from the vineyards of Rueda. He practised a meticulous viticulture and had faith in his soil, in quality and in the pleasure of making wine. His desire to produce great white wines is the raison d’être of the present-day winery, which his daughter Victoria Pariente established in 1998. The vineyard is in the Rueda appellation, situated on a sweeping plateau at an altitude altitude of 750 metres, along with extreme continental climate provides the perfect environment for producing outstanding white wines.

Alto Landon (D.O. Mancheula) is situated at 1,080 meters altitude in Landete (Cuenca). The winery is in the heart of 55 hectares of organic vineyards belonging to a family project that began in 2000. After spending her early wine making years in France & Argentina, Rosalia Molina returned with her husband Manuel to take over these vineyards that were first planted in 1930. Alto Landon  focuses on making natural & organic wines, and working with the local indigenous varietal Bobal. These highlands have the the ideal conditions for producing high quality grapes with more natural tannins due to the slow riping conditions. The depth of flavours & complexity of the wines is enhanced with short-term aging in French oak barrels. Only organic farming procedures are used. Water & soil fertility is only stimulated with natural fertilizers.

DSG Vineyards (David Sampedro Gil)  DSG is the project of a spirited, dynamic and very talented oenologist by the name of David Sampedro Gil. Connected through family links to several of the best bodegas presently operating in Rioja Alavesa, David founded his own winery with the aim of producing pure terrior driven wines of very, very limited production, and in our opinion amongst the very top wines that are produced in Rioja.David Sampedro's philosophy has not changed since back in 2003: he wants to produce wines that really matter to people and make a difference. For this reason, he operates his vineyards using ecological farming methods, follows biodynamic guidelines, and spends time working with indigenous varietals in other parts of Spain. David Sampedro Gil has been described as one of “Six Producers Leading the Way” in Rioja by Wine Spectator.

EL ESCOCÉS VOLANTE (Norrel Roberston) D.O. Aragón The only Master of Wine living in Spain is the man behind El Escocés Volante (The Flying Scot). In the 1990´s Norrel Roberston decided to pursue a career in winemaking and decided the best way was to learn from the cellar up. Norrel went on to work vintages in Chianti in Italy, Portugal, Australia, France and Chile. In 1998, Norrel embarked on the Master of Wine course became a Master of Wine in November 2000, winning the Robert Mondavi Award for the best overall theory performance in the exam. In 2003, he moved to Spain to as Winemaker for International Wine Services and quickly fell in love with the old Garnacha vineyards in the area of Calatayud, and decided to start making his own wines. His company - EL ESCOCÉS VOLANTE SL - took off and Norrel now produces many award winning wines made from very specially selected vineyards at high altitude in Aragon, Spain.
